Frequently Asked Questions on Student Exchange

  • Q: How many courses should I take during one exchange semester?
A: Uppsala University recommends 30 ETCS credits per semester for all students. There is some flexibility involved in this scheme: out of those 30 ETCS credits 6-8 credit points could for example be achieved with a Swedish language class.
  • Q: How do I find out the number of ETCS credit points for a given course?
A: Uppsala uses "hp" for ETCS in their course descriptions, e.g., for the course "Real time systems, 10 hp", 10 ECTS points are given.
  • Q: I just found out that a TOEFL (or equivalent) score is required with the application. It's too late now to get a TOEFL score. Is it still possible to apply?
A: You should still apply. The interview will be in English, which is an additional opportunity to show your language skills.
  • Q: Are undergraduate students allowed to be on student exchange during the last semester (i.e., the 8th semester) of their studies?
A: Unfortunately not. Yonsei University regulations do not allow spending the last semester on a student exchange.
  • Q: I want to delay my graduation by one semester to be able to go on a student exchange. Would that be possible?
A: Yes. Delaying graduation is entirely up to the discretion of the student. However, please note that Yonsei University requires students to spend semester 8 on campus.
  • Q: Can I take courses outside of my major study area during my exchange semester/year?
A: Opportunities to take courses outside of CS are limited and very much depend on available seats. However, Uppsala University does offer a beginner's course in Swedish and courses in Math in addition to CS courses. Please also refer to the question on credits below.
  • Q: I want to take course xyz during my exchange semester. Will course xyz count towards my studies at Yonsei University?
A: Before you go, you need to consult with a faculty member from the CS department who offers a course equivalent to course xyz. If this faculty member agrees on the equivalence of the two courses, you will receive credit when showing the transcript of course xyz upon your return. For non-CS courses you need to consult with the CS department's undergraduate or graduate coordinator.
